Grant Thornton has been named global 'employer of the year' by the International Accounting Bulletin (IAB) for the second consecutive year.

"It’s a great honour to be recognised again for our commitment to our people,” says Deepak Nagar, national chairman of Grant Thornton South Africa.  “We have a distinct and very deliberate people-centred culture. We foster an open-door policy that encourages everyone to voice opinions and share ideas as well as experiences. Our top priority is growing together with our people, and we will continue to look for innovative ways to create a workplace where our people can unlock their potential for growth.”

In presenting the award, the IAB said that Grant Thornton “once again impressed the judges by demonstrating its strong commitment to employees with the belief that experience created for staff is directly linked to the experience offered to clients.”

The judges went on to say, “an example of the various initiatives launched in 2014 is the Global Jam, a three day online event where Grant Thornton invited all of its 40,000 employees from 130 countries to share ideas and opinions that shape the organisation's future.

“Fourteen thousand people registered and 34% of those logged a comment during the ‘global jam’, producing a total of 13,000 posts. From there Grant Thornton developed a series of actions and initiatives, such as the global flexible working practices toolkit, to help with all stages and levels of offering and implementing flexible working practices at a local level.”

Further testament to Grant Thornton’s people-centric culture came when the global firm was named as having the Best Programme for Leadership Development by The Managing Partners' Forum, a professional body that celebrates the value of leadership and management excellence, in March 2015.

The Managing Partners' Forum said in giving the award: “Since 2008, Grant Thornton has run the Advanced Managers’ Programme (AMP) which targets rapid development of senior managers. In the years since this programme has been in place, 292 participants across 43 member firms have successfully graduated from AMP and the strength of the programme continues.

At the end of 2014, The IAB ranked Grant Thornton as the fastest growing professional services firm in South Africa, with growth of 24% for the second year in a row.  This followed hard on the heels of Grant Thornton SA winning the title of Audit / Accounting firm of the year for 2014, at the inaugural South African Professional Services Awards (SAPSA) ceremony.

Grant Thornton South Africa is now firmly established as the undisputed leader in the mid-tier market and the fifth largest auditing, tax, outsourcing and advisory firm in the country according to the annual IAB South Africa survey released in November 2014.
